The latest adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion starring Dakota Johnson has been released on streaming site Netflix to mixed reviews.
As is fitting with the romantic era, the filming has been described as “beautiful to look at.”
Like many shows set in the 1800s, Persuasion was filmed in and around Bath. The elegant spa town is famous for its classically Georgian architecture and sprawling surrounding countryside.
The majority of the scenes in Persuasion were filmed in Bath, which is a nod to Jane Austen, who lived in the city between 1800 and 1806.
The famous Royal Crescent, which fans of Bridgerton will recognise well, features in some shots.
A key scene in the film takes place on the Gravel Walk. This area of Bath was known as a Lover’s Lane when Austen lived in the city, and it has morphed into a popular shrine for Austen fanatics over time.
Filming also took place on Bath Street, which is known for its distinctive colonnades. Here, a local Primark branch was converted into Madame Lefroy’s dress shop, as visited by Anne and Lady Russell.
Plenty of other period dramas have been shot in Bath, such as:
Persuasion shooting locations spilled out from Bath into the surrounding West Country area. Somerset residents will recognise Yeovil in Brympton House, which plays Uppercross House, home to the Musgrove family.
The 13th century manor is a quintessential English country estate and is even available for wedding hire.
Trafalgar Park in north Wilshire is the setting for the Elliot ancestral home.
The grand house was built in the 18th century and has appeared in similar adaptations, including Emma Thompson’s version of Sense and Sensibility.
The Dorset town of Lyme Regis is another key filming location, with scenes filmed on the Cobb, which is an historic stone harbour wall.
Persuasion is now streaming on Netflix.
