KINGWOOD — The final Blueprint Communities Second Saturday street fair of the season had customers lining South Price Street looking at what vendors had to offer and trying a variety of foods.
Events for the kids included bubbles, face painting, sidewalk chalk, Popsicles and inflatable bowling in honor of National Bowling Day.
Dino Colombo from Colombo Law in Morgantown was giving away bicycle helmets and T-shirts to kids.
“Helmets are expensive for parents to buy. Some parents pay up to $100 for them,” he said. “We thought we’d fix that problem by giving kids helmets. We’ve actually given away close to 6,000 over the past three years.”
Stormie Deal, owner of Real Deal, was selling cold drinks, steaks hoagies, chicken quesadillas and shaved ice.
“I have hot dogs too,” Deal said. “And homemade chili to top them with.”
Robin Breedlove, owner of Choclicherry, said she couldn’t bring her gourmet pretzels to the fair due to the heat. She did, however, have specialized decorated cookies, lollipops, caramel corn and other baked goods for sale, as well as some crocheted items like chicken-themed hats.
Price Street merchant Karen Stone of Pockets of Time said she stayed open to participate in the fair. Stone has a variety of items in her shop, ranging from collectibles and handmade soap to candles and other gift items.
Jay and Zona Harris of Meme & Lillies had a display of handmade afghans and candles, body lotion, lip gloss, foaming hand soap and natural bug repellent made from all-natural essential oils.
Diana Colado was offering lemonade, bubble tea, slushies and walking tacos. Colado said a walking taco is all of the ingredients of a taco, including taco chips, placed in a sandwich bag so it can be consumed while walking.
Tyler Kelley said his girlfriend saw an ad for the fair on Facebook, and they decided to stop by.
“She thought it would be a nice event to take the kids to,” he said.
Not all those who visited downtown Kingwood for the fair were local. Jeri Storms of Michigan said she was in town visiting her granddaughter, who was having a birthday, and decided to come to the event.
“I lived in Kingwood for a few years before moving to Michigan,” Storms said. “I heard about the fair and decided to check it out.”
Leah Turner, volunteer supervisor for CASA for Kids, was on hand to provide activities and crafts for kids and to hand out information to possible volunteers.
“We currently have nine volunteers for Preston County, and we’ve had 88 cases so far this year,” she said.
Kingwood Blueprint Community’s next event will be a farm-to-table dinner it is co-sponsoring with the Preston County Chamber of Commerce.
The dinner will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Craig Civic Center in Kingwood. Tickets are $60 per plate or $100 per couple and available at www.prestonchamber.com or by contacting the Chamber at 304-329-0576.
Chef Craig Frazee will prepare the meal using locally sourced items.
Dinner sponsorships are available for $500. Sponsors will be recognized on promotional materials and at the event. For information on becoming a sponsor, contact the Chamber of Commerce.
