Princess Beatrice was elegant in a £320 Self Portrait dress as she joined the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for a garden party at Buckingham Palace today.

The 33-year-old royal was among a host of royals standing in for the monarch, 96, who traditionally oversees four garden parties each summer but has bowed out of this year's engagements amid ongoing mobility issues. 

The annual garden parties, which are held between Buckingham Palace and Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, are a way for the monarch to celebrate and reward those who have distinguished themselves in public service. They require the royal hosts to spend more than an hour on their feet as they make their way through the crowd. 

The Queen, who will celebrate her Platinum Jubilee next week, is increasingly relying on senior royals including Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall and Prince William to stand in her stead at high profile engagements.

For the occasion, mother-of-one Bea picked a very stylish checked dress from the trendy label Self Portrait. 

The appearance from the couple comes days after she and her husband Edoardo attended the Royal Chelsea Flower Show and the preview of A Gallop Through History, which formed part of the Royal Windsor Horse Show.

The mother-of-one sported a glamourous makeup, with a trail of eyeliner circling her blue eyes and mascara adding volume to her lashes.

She completed the look with a healthy dose of bronzer and a pink lipstick. 

Her dress was described online as '1940s' in style, with a 'pleated and puffed chiffon'.

It was then 'finished with delicate neck ties and useful slip pockets'.

Self-Portrait dresses are guaranteed to come with a side of compliments – just like the one that Princess Beatrice showcased today.

Attending a garden party at Buckingham Palace, Beatrice looked chic in a checked design by the coveted brand.

Made from chiffon, it features a playful tie-neck, short puff sleeves, a belted waist and mid-length skirt. Perfection!

The Duchess of Cambridge has previously worn the trendy label, dazzling in a tailored £400 white gown from the brand as she hosted an event to thank those who worked on her Hold Still project this evening last year.

Meanwhile she also wore a mint green gown from the label as she visited the Caribbean earlier this year. 

It is the first time the garden parties have been held since 2019 after they were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. 

Beatrice is often a regular at garden parties, and attended one in May 2019 alongside her sister Princess Eugenie.  

Buckingham Palace released a statement last month revealing the Queen would not attend the annual events but did not offer an explanation. 

Meanwhile the royal paired the trendy gown with a large black-and-white patterned headband for the outing today 

Speaking on the absence, royal expert Angela Levin said: 'It's a good decision for the Queen not to attend garden parties as there would be too much standing. What a shame though.'

The annual Buckingham Palace garden parties, started in the 1860s by Queen Victoria, are a way of recognising and rewarding public service and see people from all walks of life enjoy high tea on the lawn to the sounds of a military band.

Every year, the Queen invites 30,000 people to attend the parties. At each Garden Party, around 27,000 cups of tea, 20,000 sandwiches and 20,000 slices of cake are consumed.

For the occasion men are asked to wear morning dress or lounge suits while women are invited to wear a 'day dress, usually with hats or fascinators'.     

Three garden parties have been held at Buckingham Palace in May, followed by a party at Holyroodhouse in August.
