After you suds up with this, everyone will be asking, “Wait, is that Santal 33?!”

You’ve probably known for decades that your home, handbag and hotel choice could be a sign of status. But in the past 10 years, “status soaps” have become a booming business. Thanks to the massive popularity of Aesop’s $40-per-bottle Resurrection Aromatique Hand Wash at New York City restaurants and hotels since 2012, brands like Byredo and Diptyque have grown cult followings for their spendy and chic soaps as well. Now in 2022, the smell of your soap can say as much about you as the car you drive.

But since we’d rather invest our money in, well, investments, or in a next-level vacation to a winery, our ears perked up when we heard about Method’s Vetiver + Amber Gel Hand Wash on TikTok. It smells exactly like Le Labo’s Santal 33 fragrance ($198 for 0.7 ounces), but this hand soap will run you just $6.99 per 12-ounce bottle.

Method describes the fragrance of this soap as “warm and woodsy” with “hearty notes of amber, earthy vetiver and a crisp whiff of cedarwood.”

Fans on Amazon, Target and Bed Bath & Beyond agree that it deserves a nearly perfect five-star rating and is definitely “worth the money…the scent is very subtle. Honestly I'd wear it as a perfume!” That’s because it “smells exactly like santal 33,” according to another devotee.

Speaking of Santal 33, the brand’s body gel is the closest thing they offer to a liquid hand soap. The gel is $59 for 8 ounces, and an 8-ounce Santal 33 scented bar of soap is $52. (We can think of a really stellar place to put that extra $45 to $51 to great use…)

It’s not just the during-use scent that makes this $7 soap a winner, though. The aroma that lingers after each use and a consistency that leaves hands feeling clean without residue or dryness. One user says, “It smells and performs like an expensive hand soap that you would find in a luxury hotel. Love it!”

The bottle is recyclable and made with aluminum brushed black metallic finish to match the matte design trend. But we won’t tell a soul if you decide to refill your status soap bottle with the Method version instead…
